About 2 years ago, I was out with some friends at a local club. I started talking to this really hot girl, when out of nowhere, this oversized meathead and his two buddies started threatening to “f**k me up”.
I calmly turned to him, and within just one sentence, they were walking quickly in the other direction. After the bouncers had thrown them out, both the head bouncer and the girl I was talking to were amazed at what just happened.
The bouncer wanted to know what I had said to them that “spooked” them so much. He was twice my size and said he had never managed to get guys to back off like that. When I told them I taught Self-Defense, both the girl and the bouncer wanted to know what martial art I studied, but I told them that was a waste of time.
The question is: What did I say to those thugs? How did I do it?
If you would have asked me if this was even possible a 5 years ago, I would have said "No way." But now I do it ALL THE TIME.
It's not uncommon for me to go out all night, or walk through the “bad part” of town, and literally watch attakers and bad guys BACK OFF when they see me.
And it doesn't matter where I am. I can be in any situation and thugs, bullies and street punks wouldn’t dare cross me.
I have to mention one more thing: I'm a regular guy. I'm 26 years old, I'm only 6ft tall, and I'm average build. I don’t look aggressive or threatening and I don’t hang around with rough or tough looking types of guys.
BUT!!
About 5 years ago, things were very different. I used to spend hours in the gym each week, thousands of dollars each year on martial arts and combat training, and I would meet every confrontation with aggression and sometimes violence. None of that taught me anything about real violence or how to deal with it.
Back then I was angry that no martial art or self-defense system “worked” in real life.
- I was scared of guys who might have more training or skill than me
- I was frustrated that instructors and systems looked so good in the advert, but were just the same useless junk
- I felt that people just didn’t take me seriously or were interested in anything I had to say
- I was jealous and INTIMIDATED by guys that didn’t get picked on, but weren’t scary looking and didn’t know how to fight
So how did I go from not even being so frustrated, angry and scared to being the type of guy that nobody wants to mess with?
Unfortunately, Most Guys Will Keep Doing This Until the Day They Die
I know that you want to learn how to protect yourself. Everyone does. But what do most people do about it?
Nothing.
They sit back and take what they are given—which is worse than nothing. Sure, it makes sense to go and learn some moves against an attacker. But did you ever think that maybe these moves are completely USELESS in REAL violence and could actually put you in more danger?
And just about person I've ever taught self defense to has studied some kind of martial art or combat system already, but they still don’t feel confident that they could defend themselves in a dangerous or violent assault.
Usually their instructor or trainer will tell them that the harder they train, the more belts they get, the more weights they lift or the angrier they get, the less likely people are to push them around or pick on them.
Well I'm here to tell you that these ideas are B.S.!
I started Tae Kwon Do at the age of 15, and by the time I was 19 I had won 2 National Titles, broken records and was in training for the 2004 Olympics by the age of 21. One of the “bonuses” of being a title holder was the chance to visit other martial arts schools and combat systems, so I got a flavor of pretty much everything out there. I was also a strong competitor in MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) and in some so called “no rules” competitions.
And this is WHY I know these ideas are all WRONG!
If what the instructors told me was right, nobody would have even stood a chance in a street fight with me. I was considered one of the best fighters there were at the time, but for some reason, I couldn’t use any of my skills in an ACTUAL STREETFIGHT.
That wasn’t the only problem.
Not only could I not use any of the martial arts and so called “street” techniques I had learned, I was also battling against something I didn’t understand…

About five years ago, I got sick and tired of not knowing how to defend myself. I was sick and tired of being scared of what someone could do to me. I was sick and tired of people not respecting me or taking me seriously. I couldn't stand the idea that I was going to spend the rest of my life being like this and not achieving what I wanted.
I went on a personal mission, I spent months studying all of the books, tapes, DVDs and self-defense systems I could get my hands on. But the frustrating part was thatmost of what I learned was WRONG—most of it simply didn't work when I tried it!
Have you ever looked at a martial art or self defense DVD and thought “These moves look great!”—EXCEPT THAT THEY DON'T SHOW YOU HOW TO DEFEND YOURSELF!
All most systems deal with is how to do punch A and use it in scenario B. Or how to escape scenario B with complicated wrist lock C. They don't tell you ANYTHING about how to deal with things like FEAR, Adrenaline, Panic. These books only work if you are fighting your TRAINING PARTNER! They do nothing to show you how to fight back against someone you fear or are intimidated by!
Even worse, most of these systems deal with “rehearsed” situations that would never happen in real life!
The sad truth is that most people either give up after a couple of lessons, or keep training in the hope that one day they might learn what they wanted to.
